The influence of patient gender in healthcare professional decision-making: an interaction analysis of simulation debriefings (Gauci et al., 2022)

Aims: To analyse how Health Care Professionals (HCPs) surface, discuss, and manage topics related to gender in their decision-making

Method: Researchers employed discursive psychology and conversation analysis in a mental healthcare simulation centre to examine 10 simulation debriefings.

Findings: Four main themes were identified, indicating how gender conversations are handled: collaboration, surprise, laughter, and silence. Existing gender biases affected treatment decisions for mental health patients.

Contributions: By using simulations as a research tool, this study adds to existing research on discrimination within healthcare settings.
