Discovering Careers in Mental Health: A Qualitative Pilot Study of a Novel Simulation-Based Education Programme (Bansal et al., 2022)

Aims: To explore and evaluate a novel Simulation-Based Education (SBE) program designed to introduce individuals to careers in mental health.

Method: 94 Participants were required to fill in qualitative questionnaires regarding experiences and perceptions of the SBE program, which included four simulated scenarios from hospital admission to returning home, whilst observing the roles of different mental health professions.

Findings: Thematic analysis revealed SBE was effective where participants had a greater understanding of mental healthcare roles and a stronger desire to challenge mental health stigma.

Contributions: The potential of the SBE program's effectiveness in fostering interest and understanding of mental health careers serves as a valuable foundation for further research and development in SBE to inspire more individuals to pursue these careers.
