Ever wanted to use an image or a video from YouTube but weren’t sure if you could? Ever wanted to know how to share your work safely?

Copyright exists to protect the creative industries whether it relates to written, audio or visual work.

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) colleagues are both creators of content and users of copyrighted material. As such, it is important for them to understand implementing copyright in a way that is fair, but also to be leaders in supporting and driving both strategic and technological change.

In this session Susan Smith will introduce some founding principles of modern copyright. There will be an explanation on how licensing can be applied to extend legal rights and support the re-use of information.

The session aims to support:

1. Understanding the importance of balance between protecting the creative industries and fair use

2. Raising awareness of frameworks and information sources to help you check and challenge your own practice

3. Provision of tools to support you in making risk-based decisions

4. Giving confidence in the use of Creative Commons licences

5. Sharing case studies and stories to surface copyright challenges faced in the workplace

6. Use of the NHS Copyright First Responders service and potential partnership working with Knowledge & Library colleagues

Susan is a Knowledge & Library Manager at Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Whilst not legally trained, for over ten years has answered copyright queries on behalf of the NHS Copyright First Responders network, supported discussions around the NHS Copyright Licence and is the NHS in England representative on the Library & Archive Copyright Alliance which lobbies for fair copyright legislation.
