Development of a regional MRCPsych core training programme as a co-production between trainers and trainees

A national requirement for core psychiatry deaneries is that they provide a regular academic teaching programme to aid trainees attain their core competencies. Details of these programmes are based upon national standards, then delegated to local trainers’ discretion, leading to variation in approaches. Since 2021, the Peninsula Deanery has moved from a consultant-led model to a co-production one with more trainee involvement in designing and coordinating the programme. This aims to develop the core trainees into independent learners capable of self-regulated learning. This article summarises reflections from the course development team and trainees and links the process to some of the relevant medical educational literature.
