Pressure ulcers are one of the most complex and challenging problems in all of healthcare and are a commonand costly secondary complication of living with aspinal cord injury (SCI).1 Controversy remains aboutthe precise mechanisms of pressure ulcer etiology.
Pressure ulcers are thought to be caused by localizedshear and/or compression over a prolonged periodover bony prominences at certain anatomic locations(e.g. sacrum), leading to ischemia and eventually necrosisof the overlying soft tissues. Ulcers can develop inresponse to pressure applied to an area of skin over avery short time or when less pressure is applied over alonger period.
