Artificial intelligence beyond the basics

In 2023, the NHS Digital Academy published an Artificial Intelligence (AI) capability framework. Its aim was to help healthcare workers identify gaps in their current knowledge.

We have now curated some learning resources, mapped to that capability framework, so that whatever your level of knowledge of AI, you can now quickly find educational assets and training to support you in your role.

All resources are free to access and have been approved by a panel of AI in healthcare experts. The education is mapped directly to the framework which recommends NHS staff obtain a good level of awareness in the following 6 areas:

1. Understanding AI – these learning resources helps you understand AI and how modelling works

2. Providing Care using Digital Technology –   give you an understanding of what considerations are needed when looking at using AI to provide care

3. Ethical, legal and regulatory considerations in AI – give you an understanding of the considerations needed to be looked at when considering the possibility of using AI.

4. Planning for AI – contains data standards and Machine learning and natural language processing

5. Implementing and Evaluating AI systems – gives you an understanding of how implementation and evaluation and examples of how this has previously been carried out via case studies

6. Robotics in AI – gives you case studies of how Robotics is currently being used in the NHS via case studies
