In support of a national drive for excellence, the CNO Excellence Programme was established in 2022, building on the CNO England’s national expansion of initiatives such as American Nurses Credentialing Centre (ANCC) Pathway to Excellence Programme and Professional Shared Decision-making.  Aligned to key strategies and policy such as the NHS Long-term Plan (2019), NHS Long-term workforce plan (2023) and People at the Heart of Care: adult social care reform white paper (2021) the Excellence programme brought together experts, key stakeholders, and colleagues from across health and care.

Evidence confirms that those who strive for excellence are more likely to achieve better outcomes for patients, residents, service users, their families, and unpaid carers through improvements in care and treatment offers. Similarly, where a culture of excellence is embraced, people thrive, and people are supported to use every opportunity to raise standards and to push boundaries.

The CNO Excellence programme aimed to support staff from across health and care to adopt multi-disciplinary, collaborative approaches which support excellence to be delivered at scale and pace.

Other programme resources are published and stored on the Excellence Futures platform - Chief Nursing Officer for England's Excellence Programme - Futures.
