Complex Clinical Reasoning
The Complex Clinical Reasoning elearning programme supports clinicians from enhanced to advanced practice in developing clinical reasoning. Advanced practice involves autonomous work across the four pillars in NHSE 2025 framework; enhanced practice is the preceding level, where experienced clinicians make complex decisions within their scope and context.
Supervision and structure
The programme runs alongside clinical supervision. Supervisors help learners apply reasoning in practice, while the elearning provides foundational concepts adaptable to varied professions and contexts. All nine sessions can be completed in any order, supported by a supervisor pack.
Session overviews
1: Principles of clinical reasoning – Introduces the learning process and shaping learning opportunities.
2: Normative and narrative accounts – Explores two perspectives influencing decision-making.
3: Adding complexity – Considers historical, social and cultural influences on reasoning.
4: Theory into practice – Outlines models of reasoning and personalised care.
5: Balancing analysis – Uses a case study to show analytical, intuitive and emotional elements.
6: Multi-professional reasoning – Integrates approaches across professions.
7: Evidence to mindlines – Looks at evidence-based medicine and clinical mindlines.
8: Philosophical considerations – Highlights assumptions behind how clinicians use information.
9: Ethical considerations – Covers ethical perspectives relevant to clinical decisions.
Evidence for portfolios
After completing all sessions, learners undertake observed practice, reflect, and add evidence to their portfolio for progression. Supervisors can issue a Certificate of Completion.
