Complications of excess weight (CEW) in children and young people

The Complications of excess weight in children and young people programme is a foundation elearning course for multi professionals working with children and young people (CYP) living with obesity, and their families.

The purpose of the elearning programme is to:

  • support multidisciplinary team (MDT) clinicians to deliver evidence-based, quality care to CYP with severe obesity by developing their understanding of identifying and treating conditions related to excess weight
  • standardise training opportunities across the country and improve retention by making this a more attractive space to work in
  • facilitate knowledge transfer between MDT members


Expected outcomes: 

  • improved experiences and quality of care for CYP referred to CEW clinics
  • helps to achieve wider strategic objectives on improving treatment of obesity in CYP, set out by the NHS Long Term Plan
  • improved knowledge in MDTs of the biopsychosocial factors that contribute to obesity and how to deliver evidence-based quality care for CYP
  • improved experience of care for CYP living with complications related to excess weight

On completion of these modules, participants will have gained a foundation level understanding of the importance of identification of childhood obesity, correct methods for taking measurements, the complications of living with overweight and obesity in childhood, prevalence data for the UK, the evidence base for interventions and the importance of safeguarding.
