Delivering Ear Checks in Residential Special Schools: Training Programme
The Delivering Ear Checks in Residential Special Schools programme has five elearning sessions. It supports staff who help children and young people with learning disabilities and/or who are autistic in residential special schools and colleges.
Who the learning is for
This programme is for school staff, nurses, audiologists, therapists, carers and support workers involved in health checks for children and young people in residential special school settings.
What the programme covers
Across five short sessions, learners are introduced to:
- Why ear and hearing health is important
- Simple auditory anatomy and common causes of hearing loss
- Infection control needed for safe ear checks
- How to prepare for and carry out an ear check
- What to do when a problem is found and when to refer on
What learners will gain
By the end of the programme, learners will be able to:
- Understand the importance of good ear and hearing health
- Carry out a safe, supportive ear check
- Make reasonable adjustments to meet each child or young person’s needs
- Spot possible ear or hearing problems
- Know when and how to make an onward referral
This programme supports the NHS Long Term Plan to improve sensory checks in residential special schools and helps staff work together so every child or young person can access the checks they need.
