Cultural Awareness for Educators E-Learning Package

Context

Workforce inequalities and health disparities continue to persist across healthcare settings, affecting workplaces, learning environments, and patient care. Cultural Awareness for Educators is a critical enabler in addressing these challenges. It directly supports the successful delivery of the NHS EDI Improvement Plan, the Educator Workforce Strategy, and the Safe Learning Environment Charter, and aligns closely with strategies focused on improving both learner and patient experience. 

This approach also reflects the ambitions set out in the NHS 10‑Year Health Plan for England and the forthcoming NHS 10‑Year Workforce Plan, reinforcing the need for coordinated, system‑wide action to build a more inclusive and equitable healthcare workforce. 

Developed in collaboration  

Clinical educators responded to a national call for collaborators on cultural awareness and humility, with representation from the following regions: London, Midlands, North East and Yorkshire, North West, and South West.  

Educators explored current challenges and opportunities for training and learning, guided by an experienced subject matter expert and supported by the project team. Insights from this collaboration informed the content development, and a Digital Learning Designer created the package, embedding inclusive pedagogy throughout. 

Iintended for use across both clinical and no-clinical environments, the resource supports educators to explore and develop cultural humility, a reflective, ongoing practice that goes beyond cultural awareness. Educators will be encouraged to examine their own assumptions and biases, strengthen inclusive teaching practice, and create equitable learning environments for every learner they support.
