The IV Therapy Passport is a standardised e-learning and competency assessment programme that ensures healthcare professionals are trained and assessed to safely administer intravenous (IV) medication. It enables recognition and transfer of IV competence across organisations, reducing duplication and supporting consistent, high-quality care.
Who Is It For?
The IV Therapy Passport is designed for registered and student healthcare professionals who care for babies, children, young people and adults across health and social care, and whose roles involve IV medication administration.
It can be accessed at multiple career stages, including:
• Pre-registration students (nurses, midwives, AHPs, doctors)
• Internationally recruited healthcare professionals
• Newly registered professionals
• Existing staff requiring upskilling
Key Objectives:
The IV Therapy Passport aims to:
• Standardise practice – set a single, evidence-based standard for IV training and assessment.
• Support transferability – enable recognition of IV competence across organisations through a validated digital passport.
• Improve patient care – ensure timely access to skilled practitioners.
• Enhance experience – reduce duplication, retraining, and barriers to mobility.
• Strengthen assurance – provide clear, auditable competency records.
• Build capability – support workforce agility through a digitally tracked record of competence.
Programme Content:
The programme includes seven interactive e-learning sessions with eAssessments:
1. IV Medication Administration – a complex process
2. The IV Route
3. Vascular Access Devices
4. Risks and Complications
5. Fluids and Electrolytes
6. Preparation and Administration of IV Medication
7. Drug Calculations
All sessions and eAssessments must be completed before supervised practice begins.
Development:
Originally developed in 2018 by CapitalNurse with Health Education England (HEE) and partners, the IV Therapy Passport established a standardised approach to IV training and assessment.
Nationally available, NHS-owned, and free to access, it supports multi-professional teams to deliver safe, standardised IV therapy across all care settings.
