FeNO in Asthma
The Fractional exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) training package supports the national AAC programme to improve asthma care across England. It aims to increase the safe and effective use of FeNO testing, especially in primary care, to support better asthma diagnosis and management. The package includes two elearning sessions that help learners understand what FeNO is, how the test works, and how FeNO results can support clinical decisions.
Intended audience
This learning is mainly for people working in primary care, but any health professional may complete the modules. This includes respiratory nurses, GPs, pharmacists, healthcare support workers, technicians, and doctors in training.
Key areas covered
Across the two modules, learners will explore:
- What FeNO is and how it measures inflammation in the lungs
- How FeNO testing fits into the wider “asthma diagnostic jigsaw”
- Why FeNO is useful in improving the accuracy of asthma diagnosis
- How FeNO helps guide treatment decisions and reduce inappropriate prescribing
- How to perform FeNO testing safely and effectively
- How to talk about FeNO with patients using clear and supportive language
- How to interpret FeNO levels using real-world patient examples and case studies
Learning objectives
By completing this programme, learners will be able to:
- Explain what FeNO is and why it is used in asthma care
- Describe how FeNO testing is performed and what good practice looks like
- Recognise how FeNO can improve diagnostic accuracy and treatment choices
- Interpret FeNO results confidently across a range of patient scenarios
- Use FeNO as part of a safe, person-centred approach to asthma management
