Performing and Interpreting Spirometry
The Performing and Interpreting Spirometry programme aims to improve the quality, consistency and availability of spirometry across the NHS and wider health and care sector. Developed in partnership with the Association of Respiratory Technologists & Physiologists (ARTP), the programme consists of 6 elearning sessions that enhance understanding of how spirometry is conducted and how results should be interpreted. The learning supports national priorities focused on earlier detection of respiratory conditions, increased diagnostic capacity and high-quality, standardised training.
The programme is designed for a national, multi-professional audience involved in respiratory diagnostics, including staff in primary care, community services, and other clinical environments where spirometry is undertaken.
It is recommended that learners undertake the learning sequentially:
- Pre-test instructions and preparation for testing
- Calibration and verification
- Performance of spirometry
- Assessing spirometry acceptability
- Assessing bronchodilator response
- Reporting spirometry
Across the programme, learners will gain an understanding of the principles and processes of performing spirometry, alongside the standards that define high-quality testing as set by ARTP. The programme will also develop learners’ ability to interpret spirometry results accurately and confidently, supporting improved diagnostic decision-making. Additional objectives include applying best practice, recognising common issues that affect test quality, and understanding the role of spirometry within wider national strategies to detect and manage respiratory disease earlier.
