Health services globally are seeking to increase the diversity of their workforces by actively recruiting from the communities they serve, with the aim of extending the ability of organisations to respond to the needs of underserved communities and to tackle health inequalities. Widening participation has particular relevance for medical education, given the ongoing concern that people from under-represented groups – particularly those from lower socio-economic backgrounds – remain proportionally under-represented in this key profession, which, traditionally, has been seen as elitist.
