Racial inclusivity in practice education
This resource has been co-produced by physiotherapy students (Adrees Adrees, Torah Brown, Nadine Ishani, Danielle Oghuvbu, Kieron Parkinson), practice educators (Pilar Bustamante, Deborah Konu, Lynette Mills, Sheniz White and Suk Wong), academic colleagues (Yetunde Dairo, John Hammond, Meriel Norris, Annabel Williams) and technical experts (Bethany Kaur, Luke Woodham) and was commissioned by NHS England Workforce Training and Education (formerly Health Education England).
This resource is deliberately intended for those wishing to facilitate training sessions with practice educator colleagues to improve racial inclusivity in practice education. It was developed by and for physiotherapy practice education, so is more specific to a physiotherapy context but also has relevance to other health and social care professionals, and colleagues wishing to facilitate or undertake the training are invited to explore the resource to consider how they might apply it in their own context. It is best facilitated if practice educators can share their thoughts and actions with fellow peers. Students and practice educators felt that this would facilitate a greater impact and action than completing the training individually.
The resource is structured in a chronological way so that as a facilitator/learner, you can work through each stage from pre-learning, to introductions, to the case study videosand questions to consider and actions to take forward individually or collectively. There is also a questionnaire that will help learners evaluate their confidence in facilitating greater racial inclusivity before and after the training.
The workshop is intended to run for 2.5 hours and guidance is given in the resource for the timing of each activity and prompt questions to consider.
Additional information
This resource is aimed at increasing awareness and addressing issues of racial inclusivity in practice education. It is designed as a workshop so practice educators can share their thoughts and actions with fellow peers to be more inclusive allies.
