NHSBT Live blood stocks
NHSBT providesshortage plans for red cells, and plateletswhich describe 4 phases of blood stock status. The phases are:
- Green: when circumstances are normal and where supply meets demand
- Pre-Amber: when there is reduced availability of blood for a short or a prolonged period
- Amber: when there is reduced availability of blood for a short or a prolonged period which impacts on clinical activity
- Red: when there are severe, prolonged shortages which impact on clinical activity
Amber alerts are typically issued when blood stocks reach <2 days worth of supply available.
Red alerts aretypically issued when blood stocks reach <1dayworth of supply available.
Each phase of alert comes with a range of actions for users of blood as well as for NHSBT.
