Frequencies Review
Data from the initial alignment survey highlighted that there is a variance in frequencies and delivery methods across the Organisations. This data has been converted into dashboards for organisations to compare what they are doing compared to other organisations. For access to the dashboards please follow this link: How to access the NHSE StatMand Dashboard
In order to better understand the data we have been reviewing submissions which are delivering the competency more frequent and those less frequent and contacting the relevant submitting Organisations to understand why, and the evidence base for these local decisions.
Refresher training vs assessment of competence
Digging a bit deeper, it is important to consider whether the frequency refers to ‘refresher training’ i.e. learners are required to repeat the training, or ‘assessment of competence’ whereby learners are asked to take a test for them to confirm their knowledge (e.g. an e-assessment) and/or skill (e.g. a practical assessment).
Repeating training with an assessment at the end will clearly take more time, compared to completing an assessment and only completed the learning if the learner fails the assessment or there is materially different learning content to be gained.
Going forwards, it is clear that those new to the NHS need to complete training to achieve certain learning outcomes and then pass an assessment, whilst those that have been working in the NHS for any period of time need to demonstrate their competence and only repeat the original training if they fail the assessment or there is materially different learning content to be gained.
